<p>The Obama administration&#8217;s <a title="http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/nov/9/body-of-evidence/" href="http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/nov/9/body-of-evidence/">censoring of photographs</a> of the late Osama bin Laden, lest they offend Muslims, is one thing; but what about censoring words, especially those pivotal to U.S. security?</p>
<p>The <a title="http://news.yahoo.com/obama-administration-pulls-references-islam-terror-training-materials-044605689.html" href="http://news.yahoo.com/obama-administration-pulls-references-islam-terror-training-materials-044605689.html">Daily Caller</a> reveals that &#8220;the Obama administration has been pulling back all training materials used for the law enforcement and national security communities, in order to eliminate all references to Islam that some Muslim groups have claimed are offensive.&#8221;</p>
<p>The move comes after complaints from advocacy organizations including the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and others identified as Muslim Brotherhood front groups in the 2004 Holy Land Foundation terror fundraising trial. In a Wednesday Los Angeles Times <a title="http://articles.latimes.com/2011/oct/19/opinion/la-oe-almarayati-fbi-20111019" href="http://articles.latimes.com/2011/oct/19/opinion/la-oe-almarayati-fbi-20111019">op-ed</a>, Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) president Salam al-Marayati threatened the FBI with a total cutoff of cooperation between American Muslims and law enforcement if the agency failed to revise its law enforcement training materials. Maintaining the training materials in their current state &#8220;will undermine the relationship between law enforcement and the Muslim American community,&#8221; al-Marayati wrote. Multiple online sources detail MPAC&#8217;s close alignment with CAIR. In his op-ed, Al-Marayati demanded that the Justice Department and the FBI &#8220;issue a clear and unequivocal apology to the Muslim American community&#8221; and &#8220;establish a thorough and transparent vetting process in selecting its trainers and materials.&#8221;</p>
<p>Accordingly, after discussing the matter with Attorney General Eric Holder, Dwight C. Holton said &#8220;I want to be perfectly clear about this: training materials that portray Islam as a religion of violence or with a tendency towards violence are wrong, they are offensive, and they are contrary to everything that this president, this attorney general and Department of Justice stands for. They will not be tolerated.&#8221;</p>
<p>Even before these Muslim complaints and threats, <a title="http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/024710.php" href="http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/024710.php">President Obama</a> alluded to censoring words when he said soon after taking office: &#8220;Words matter … because one of the ways we&#8217;re going to win this struggle ["war on terror"] is through the battle of [Muslims'] hearts and minds&#8221; (followed by things like commissioning NASA to make Muslims &#8220;<a title="http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/07/06/nasa-official-walks-claim-muslim-outreach-foremost-mission/" href="http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010/07/06/nasa-official-walks-claim-muslim-outreach-foremost-mission/">feel good</a>&#8221; about themselves).</p>
<p>As if there were not already <a title="http://article.nationalreview.com/370554/studying-the-islamic-way-of-war/raymond-ibrahim" href="http://article.nationalreview.com/370554/studying-the-islamic-way-of-war/raymond-ibrahim">a lamentable lack</a> of study concerning Muslim law war doctrine in the curriculum of American military studies—including in the <a title="http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=52644" href="http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=52644">Pentagon</a> and <a title="http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/strategic-collapse-at-the-army-war-college/" href="http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/strategic-collapse-at-the-army-war-college/">U.S. Army War College</a>—the administration&#8217;s more aggressive censorship program will only exacerbate matters. Last year&#8217;s Quarterly Defense Report [<a title="http://www.defense.gov/qdr/images/QDR_as_of_12Feb10_1000.pdf" href="http://www.defense.gov/qdr/images/QDR_as_of_12Feb10_1000.pdf">QDR</a>], a strategic document, does not mention anything remotely related to Islam—even as it stresses <a title="http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/78855-pentagon-review-to-address-climate-change-for-the-first-time" href="http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/78855-pentagon-review-to-address-climate-change-for-the-first-time">climate change</a>, which it sees as an &#8220;accelerant of instability and conflict&#8221; around the world.</p>
<p>This attempt to whitewash Islam goes back to a 2008 <a title="http://www.investigativeproject.org/documents/misc/127.pdf" href="http://www.investigativeproject.org/documents/misc/127.pdf">government memo</a> that not only warned against &#8220;offending,&#8221; &#8220;insulting,&#8221; or being &#8220;confrontational&#8221; to Muslims, but tried to justify such censorship as follows:</p>
<blockquote><p>Never use the terms &#8220;jihadist&#8221; or &#8220;mujahideen&#8221; in conversation to describe the terrorists. A mujahed, a holy warrior, is a positive characterization in the context of a <em>just war</em>. In Arabic, jihad means &#8220;striving in the path of God&#8221; and is used in many contexts beyond warfare. Calling our enemies jihadis and their movement a global jihad unintentionally <em>legitimizes their actions</em> [emphasis added].</p></blockquote>
<p>Aside from the fact that the above definitions are highly misleading, the notion that the words we use can ever have an impact on what is and is not legitimate for Muslims is beyond incompetant: Muslims are not waiting around for Americans or their government—that is, the misguided, the deluded, in a word, the infidel—to define Islam for them. For Muslims, only Sharia law determines right and wrong: whatever falls inside Shra law is right; whatever falls outside Sharia law is wrong.</p>
<p>The U.S. government needs to worry less about which words appease Muslims and worry more about providing its intelligence community—not to mention its own citizenry—with accurate knowledge concerning the nature of the threat.</p>
<p>Without words related to Islam, how are analysts to make sense of the current conflict? What are the goals and motivations of the jihadists? What are their methods? Who might be &#8220;radicalizing&#8221; them? With whom are they affiliated? Who supports them? These and a host of other questions are unintelligible without free use of words related to Islam.</p>
<p>Knowledge is linked to language: the more precise the language, the more precise the knowledge. In the current conflict, to acquire accurate knowledge, which is essential to victory, we need to begin with accurate language.</p>
<p>This means U.S. intelligence analysts and policymakers need to be able to use, and fully appreciate the significance of, words related to Islam—starting with the word &#8220;Islam&#8221; itself: <em>Submission—</em>to a worldview based on Sharia law, a set of assumptions and imperatives thoroughly different from those in Western common law. Whatever falls inside Sharia law is right – including unequal justice under law; religious and gender inequality under law; criminalization of lifestyle choices as well as freedom of religion and speech – and whatever falls outside Sharia law is wrong.</p>
<p>It means the U.S. military needs to begin expounding and studying Islamic law and war doctrine—without fear of reprisal, such as when counter-terrorism strategist <a title="http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jan/4/inside-the-ring-8-34302/" href="http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jan/4/inside-the-ring-8-34302/">Stephen Coughlin</a> was fired by the Pentagon for focusing on Islamic doctrine and therefore being politically incorrect. It means America&#8217;s leadership needs to take that <a title="http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Sun_Tzu" href="http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Sun_Tzu">ancient dictum</a>—&#8221;Know thy enemy&#8221;—seriously.</p>

<p>Knowledge is inextricably linked to language. The less accurate words are,  the less accurate the knowledge they impart; conversely, the more precise the  language, the more precise the knowledge. In the war on terror, to acquire  accurate knowledge — which is pivotal to victory — we need to begin with  accurate language.</p>
<p>Would the free world have understood the Nazi threat if, instead of calling  them what they called themselves, &#8220;Nazis,&#8221; it had opted to simply call them  &#8220;extremists&#8221; — a word wholly overlooking the racist, expansionary, and  supremacist elements that are part and parcel of the word &#8220;Nazi&#8221;?</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the U.S. government, apparently oblivious to this  interconnection between language and knowledge, appears to be doing just that.  Even <a title="http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/024710.php" href="http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/024710.php">President Obama</a> alluded  to this soon after taking office when he said, &#8220;Words matter in this situation  because one of the ways we&#8217;re going to win this struggle [war on terror] is  through the battle of [Muslims'] hearts and minds.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to an <a title="http://www.investigativeproject.org/documents/misc/127.pdf" href="http://www.investigativeproject.org/documents/misc/127.pdf">official  memo</a>, when talking about Islamists and their goals, analysts are to refrain  from using Arabic words of Islamic significance (&#8220;mujahidin,&#8221; &#8220;salafi,&#8221;  &#8220;ummah&#8221;); nor should they employ helpful English or anglicized words (&#8220;jihadi,&#8221;  &#8220;Islamo-fascism,&#8221; &#8220;caliphate&#8221;). Instead, vague generics (&#8220;terrorists,&#8221;  &#8220;extremists,&#8221; &#8220;totalitarians&#8221;) should suffice.<span id="more-316"></span></p>
<p>A renewed defense of this disturbing trend was recently published by one  Colonel <a title="http://smallwarsjournal.com/mag/docs-temp/213-vordermark.pdf" href="http://smallwarsjournal.com/mag/docs-temp/213-vordermark.pdf">Jeffrey  Vordermark</a> and deserves examination. After suggesting that Americans &#8220;love  to throw around foreign words,&#8221; Vordermark writes:</p>
<p>We have fallen into the &#8220;jihad<em>&#8220;</em> trap. The term is used in casual  banter yet most remain clueless regarding its origin or meanings. We think,  therefore we know. Pundits, academics, and laymen profess to know its meaning,  and the term is daily news in the mouths of reporters and in the banners of  headlines. Unfortunately, its very use assumes that Islam is simple and  monolithic. … As a nation and society, we could not be more incorrect.</p>
<p>While lofty sounding, this view is riddled with problems. First, by seeking  to excise the word &#8220;jihad&#8221; from public discourse, due to the erroneous notion  that that term is apparently unknowable, this position is self-defeatist.</p>
<p>&#8220;Jihad&#8221; has a very precise, juristic definition; more to the point, Sunni  Islam — which accounts for nearly 90% of the Islamic world — is, in fact,  &#8220;simple and monolithic,&#8221; thanks to the totalitarian nature of Islamic law  (Sharia), which categorizes all possible human actions as being either  forbidden, discouraged, legitimate, recommended, or obligatory. Indeed, of the  major religions of the world, none is perhaps so black and white, so clear cut  as Islam, which meticulously delineates to Muslims the correct &#8220;way&#8221; of living  (&#8220;way,&#8221; incidentally, being the literal definition of the word &#8220;Sharia&#8221;).</p>
<p>Thus to try to portray Islam and its institutions as somehow &#8220;otherworldly&#8221;  and unfathomable — so let&#8217;s just not bother trying to understand in the first  place — is not only folly, but precisely what the Islamists themselves most  desire: to guard Islam&#8217;s more troubling doctrines, such as jihad, from infidel  scrutiny.</p>
<p>Vordermark continues:</p>
<p>Historically the term [jihad] applied to the concept of either a &#8220;greater  jihad,&#8221; or a &#8220;lesser jihad.&#8221; The former denoting the daily struggle of the  believer to overcome &#8220;self&#8221; in the pursuit of Allah&#8217;s will, and the latter  <em>traditionally meaning defense of religion, family, or homeland</em> [emphasis  added].</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s for the time being overlook the hackneyed stress on the so-called  greater-lesser jihad dichotomy — which, semantics and sophistry aside, does not  invalidate the lesser jihad (i.e., armed warfare). The real problem here is that  Vordermark&#8217;s assertion that the military &#8220;jihad&#8221; has been &#8220;traditionally&#8221;  limited to &#8220;defensive warfare&#8221; is totally false.</p>
<p>Even so, Vordermark is to be excused; he warns us about accepting definitions  of &#8220;jihad&#8221; from &#8220;pundits, academics, and laymen,&#8221; and surely his falls into this  category. Thus let us dispense once and for all with infidel-based definitions —  including my own — and see what Islam&#8217;s own most revered authorities have to say  about what &#8220;jihad&#8221; <em>really</em> means:</p>
<p>First, it needs to be borne in mind that Sunni Islam is wholly dependent on  the various rulings (<em>ahkam</em>) of the so-called four schools of  jurisprudence (<em>al-madhahib al-arba&#8217;</em>). I am currently reading an Arabic  manual called <em>Al-Tarbiya al-Jihadiya fi Daw&#8217; al-Kitab wa al-Sunna</em> (&#8220;The  Jihadi Upbringing in Light of the Koran and Sunna&#8221;), written by one Sheikh Abd  al-Aziz bin Nasir al-Jalil. After closely examining the word &#8220;jihad,&#8221; he  concludes that &#8220;jihad is when Muslims wage war on infidels, after having called  on them to embrace Islam or at least pay tribute [jizya] and live in submission,  and then they refuse.&#8221;</p>
<p>The book also contains terse summaries of the word &#8220;jihad&#8221; from each of the  four schools of jurisprudence, which have the final say as to how Islam — or in  this case, jihad — is articulated: According to the Hanafis, jihad is &#8220;extreme  and strenuous warfare in the path of Allah, with one&#8217;s life, wealth, and tongue  — a call to the true religion [Islam] and war to whoever refuses to accept it&#8221;;  according to the Malikis, jihad is &#8220;when a Muslim fights an infidel in order  that Allah&#8217;s word [Sharia] reigns supreme&#8221;; according to the Shafi&#8217;is, jihad is  &#8220;fiercely fighting infidels&#8221;; and, according to the austere Hanbalis, it is  &#8220;fighting infidels.&#8221; (Note: &#8220;infidels,&#8221; or <em>kuffar</em>, simply means  non-Muslims.)</p>
<p>In short, the &#8220;traditional&#8221; meaning of jihad is offensive warfare to spread  Islamic hegemony — period. This is doctrinally, textually, historically, and  consensually demonstrable. At any rate, who probably better understands what  jihad means, the non-Muslim Jeffrey Vordermark or the Muslim Abd al-Aziz bin  Nasir al-Jalil? More to the point, whose definition will Muslims actually take  seriously?</p>
<p>While the U.S. government is busy <a id="dtki" title="http://www.meforum.org/2046/government-policies-stifle-talk-of-islam" href="http://www.meforum.org/2046/government-policies-stifle-talk-of-islam">censoring  itself</a>, only the above &#8220;legal&#8221; definition of jihad provided in al-Jalil&#8217;s  book carries any weight with Muslims — &#8220;radical-moderate&#8221; dichotomies not  withstanding. And since that is the case, so too should it be the <em>only</em> definition that non-Muslims rely on in their formal analyses — that is, if they  are ever permitted to incorporate words like &#8220;jihad&#8221; again.</p>
<p>But what is the point of all this equivocation? The <a title="http://www.investigativeproject.org/documents/misc/127.pdf" href="http://www.investigativeproject.org/documents/misc/127.pdf">government  memo</a> explains:</p>

<p>Aside from the fact that, once again, we are offered a false definition of  jihad — the equivalent of the Christian notion of &#8220;just war,&#8221; which it is not —  the apparently widespread assumption that the words we use can ever have an  impact on what is and isn&#8217;t <em>legitimate</em> for Muslims and within an Islamic  context is beyond ludicrous.</p>
<p>Muslims are not waiting around for Americans or their government — that is,  the misguided, the deluded, in a word, the <em>infidel</em> — to define Islam for  them; much less will subtle word games and euphemisms emanating from the West  manage to confer or take away Islamic legitimacy on the Islamists of the world.  For Muslims, only Islamic law, the antithesis of international law, decides what  is or is not legitimate, or in legal terminology, what is <em>mubah</em> or  <em>mahrum</em>.</p>
<p>Furthermore, the U.S. government would do well to worry less about which  words appease Muslims — the memo also warns against &#8220;offending,&#8221; &#8220;insulting,&#8221; or  being &#8220;confrontational&#8221; to Muslims — and worry more about providing its own  citizenry with accurate and meaningful terminology.</p>
<p>Words matter. Whom those words are directed at matters even more. The world&#8217;s  Muslims aren&#8217;t holding their breath to hear what sort of <em>Islamic  legitimacy</em> the U.S. government is about to confer on any given Islamist  group, since it is not for non-Muslims — the despised infidels — to decide what  is and is not Islamic in the first place. Americans, on the other hand, who  still wonder &#8220;why they hate us,&#8221; are in desperate need of understanding. Using  accurate terminology is the first step.</p>
<p>&#8230;.. in this case, without acknowledging the true  nature of the Islamist enemy and his goals — one can never possess the former:  requisite knowledge for victory.</p>

<p>Today, in a time of wars and rumors of wars emanating from the Islamic world  — from the current conflict in Gaza, to the saber-rattling of nuclear-armed  Pakistan and soon-to-be Iran — the need for non-Muslims to better understand  Islam&#8217;s doctrines and objectives concerning war and peace, and everything in  between (treaties, diplomacy), has become pressing. For instance, what does one  make of the fact that, after openly and vociferously making it clear time and  time again that its ultimate aspiration is to see Israel annihilated, Hamas  <em>also</em> pursues &#8220;peace treaties,&#8221; including various forms of concessions  from Israel — and more puzzling, receives them?</p>
<p>Before being in a position to answer such questions, one must first  appreciate the thoroughly legalistic nature of mainstream (Sunni) Islam.  Amazingly, for all the talk that Islam is constantly being &#8220;misunderstood&#8221; or  &#8220;misinterpreted&#8221; by &#8220;radicals,&#8221; the fact is, as opposed to most other religions,  Islam is a clearly defined faith admitting of no ambiguity: indeed, according to  Sharia (i.e., &#8220;Islam&#8217;s way of life,&#8221; more commonly translated as &#8220;Islamic law&#8221;)  every conceivable human act is categorized as being either forbidden,  discouraged, permissible, recommended, or obligatory. &#8220;Common sense&#8221; or  &#8220;universal opinion&#8221; has little to do with Islam&#8217;s notions of right and wrong.  All that matters is what Allah (via the Koran) and his prophet Muhammad (through  the hadith) have to say about any given subject, and how Islam&#8217;s greatest  theologians and jurists — collectively known as the <em>ulema</em>, literally, the  &#8220;ones who know&#8221; — have articulated it.</p>
<p>Consider the concept of lying. According to Sharia, deception is not only  permitted in certain situations but is sometimes deemed <em>obligatory</em>. For  instance, and quite contrary to early Christian tradition, not only are Muslims  who must choose between either recanting Islam or being put to death permitted  to lie by pretending to have apostatized; many jurists have decreed that,  according to Koran 4:29, Muslims are obligated to lie.<!--more--></p>
<h3><strong>The doctrine of taqiyya</strong></h3>
<p>Much of this revolves around the pivotal doctrine of <em>taqiyya</em>, which is  often euphemized as &#8220;religious dissembling,&#8221; though in reality simply connotes  &#8220;Muslim deception vis-à-vis infidels.&#8221; According to the authoritative Arabic  text <em>Al-Taqiyya fi Al-Islam</em>, &#8220;Taqiyya [deception] is of fundamental  importance in Islam. Practically every Islamic sect agrees to it and practices  it. We can go so far as to say that the practice of taqiyya is mainstream in  Islam, and that those few sects not practicing it diverge from the mainstream. …  Taqiyya is very prevalent in Islamic politics, especially in the modern era [p.  7; my own translation].&#8221;</p>
<p>Some erroneously believe that taqiyya is an exclusively Shia doctrine: as a  minority group interspersed among their traditional enemies, the much more  numerous Sunnis, Shias have historically had more &#8220;reason&#8221; to dissemble.  Ironically, however, Sunnis living in the West today find themselves in a  similar situation, as <em>they</em> are now the minority surrounded by  <em>their</em> historic enemies — Christian infidels.</p>
<p>The primary Koranic verse sanctioning deception vis-à-vis non-Muslims states:  &#8220;Let believers [Muslims] not take for friends and allies infidels [non-Muslims]  instead of believers. Whoever does this shall have no relationship left with  Allah — unless you but guard yourselves against them, taking precautions&#8221; (3:28;  other verses referenced by the ulema in support of taqiyya include 2:173, 2:185,  4:29, 16:106, 22:78, 40:28).</p>
<p>Al-Tabari&#8217;s (d. 923) famous <em>tafsir</em> (exegesis of the Koran) is a  standard and authoritative reference work in the entire Muslim world. Regarding  3:28, he writes: &#8220;If you [Muslims] are under their [infidels'] authority,  fearing for yourselves, behave loyally to them, <em>with your tongue</em>, while  harboring inner animosity for them. … Allah has forbidden believers from being  friendly or on intimate terms with the infidels in place of believers — except  when infidels are above them [in authority]. In such a scenario, let them  <em>act</em> friendly towards them.&#8221;</p>
<p>Regarding 3:28, Ibn Kathir (d. 1373, second in authority only to Tabari)  writes, &#8220;Whoever at any time or place fears their [infidels'] evil may protect  himself through outward show.&#8221; As proof of this, he quotes Muhammad&#8217;s close  companion, Abu Darda, who said, &#8220;Let us smile to the face of some people  [non-Muslims] while our hearts curse them&#8221;; another companion, al-Hassan, said,  &#8220;Doing taqiyya is acceptable till the Day of Judgment [i.e., in  perpetuity].&#8221;</p>
<p>Other prominent ulema, such as al-Qurtubi, al-Razi, and al-Arabi, have  extended taqiyya to cover deeds. In other words, Muslims can <em>behave</em> like  infidels — including by bowing down and worshiping idols and crosses, offering  false testimony, even exposing fellow Muslims&#8217; weaknesses to the infidel enemy —  anything short of actually killing a Muslim.</p>
<p>Is this why the Muslim American sergeant Hasan Akbar attacked and killed his  fellow servicemen in Iraq in 2003? Had his pretense of loyalty finally come up  against a wall when he realized Muslims might die at his hands? He had written  in <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2005/04/hasan-akbars-chilling-diary-entries.html" href="http://www.danielpipes.org/blog/2005/04/hasan-akbars-chilling-diary-entries.html">his  diary</a></span>: &#8220;I may not have killed any Muslims, but being in the army is the  same thing. I may have to make a choice very soon on who to kill.&#8221;</p>
<h3><strong>War is deceit</strong></h3>
<p>None of this should be surprising considering that Muhammad himself — whose  example as the &#8220;most perfect human&#8221; is to be tenaciously followed — took an  expedient view of lying. It is well known, for instance, that Muhammad permitted  lying in three situations: to reconcile two or more quarreling parties, to one&#8217;s  wife, and in war (see Sahih Muslim B32N6303, deemed an &#8220;authentic&#8221; hadith).</p>
<p>As for our chief concern here — war — the following story from the life of  Muhammad reveals the centrality of deceit in war. During the Battle of the  Trench (627), which pitted Muhammad and his followers against several non-Muslim  tribes known as &#8220;the Confederates,&#8221; one of these Confederates, Naim bin Masud,  went to the Muslim camp and converted to Islam. When Muhammad discovered that  the Confederates were unaware of their co-tribalist&#8217;s conversion, he counseled  Masud to return and try somehow to get the Confederates to abandon the siege —  &#8220;For,&#8221; Muhammad assured him, &#8220;war is deceit.&#8221; Masud returned to the Confederates  without their knowing that he had &#8220;switched sides,&#8221; and began giving his former  kin and allies bad advice. He also went to great lengths to instigate quarrels  between the various tribes until, thoroughly distrusting each other, they  disbanded, lifting the siege from the Muslims, and thereby saving Islam in its  embryonic period (see <em>Al-Taqiyya fi Al-Islam</em>; also, Ibn Ishaq&#8217;s  <em>Sira</em>, the earliest biography of Muhammad).</p>
<p>More demonstrative of the legitimacy of deception vis-à-vis infidels is the  following anecdote. A poet, <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.sacred-texts.com/isl/bukhari/bh4/bh4_273.htm" href="http://www.sacred-texts.com/isl/bukhari/bh4/bh4_273.htm">Kab bin  al-Ashruf</a></span>, offended Muhammad by making derogatory verse concerning  Muslim women. So Muhammad exclaimed in front of his followers: &#8220;Who will kill  this man who has hurt Allah and his prophet?&#8221; A young Muslim named Muhammad bin  Maslama volunteered, but with the caveat that, in order to get close enough to  Kab to assassinate him, he be allowed to lie to the poet. Muhammad <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.sacred-texts.com/isl/bukhari/bh4/bh4_274.htm" href="http://www.sacred-texts.com/isl/bukhari/bh4/bh4_274.htm">agreed</a></span>.  Maslama traveled to Kab, began denigrating Islam and Muhammad, carrying on this  way till his disaffection became convincing enough that Kab took him into his  confidences. Soon thereafter, Maslama appeared with another Muslim and, while  Kab&#8217;s guard was down, assaulted and killed him. Ibn Sa&#8217;ad&#8217;s version reports that  they ran to Muhammad with Kab&#8217;s head, to which the latter cried, &#8220;Allahu Akbar!&#8221;  (God is great!)</p>
<p>It also bears mentioning that the entire sequence of Koranic revelations is a  testimony to taqiyya; and since Allah is believed to be the revealer of these  verses, he ultimately is seen as the perpetrator of deceit — which is not  surprising since Allah himself is described in the Koran as the best &#8220;deceiver&#8221;  or &#8220;schemer&#8221; (3:54, 8:30, 10:21). This phenomenon revolves around the fact that  the Koran contains both peaceful and tolerant verses, as well as violent and  intolerant ones. The ulema were baffled as to which verses to codify into  Sharia&#8217;s worldview — the one, for instance, that states there is no coercion in  religion (2:256), or the ones that command believers to fight all non-Muslims  till they either convert, or at least submit, to Islam (8:39, 9:5, 9:29)? To get  out of this quandary, the ulema developed the doctrine of abrogation  (<em>naskh</em>, supported by Koran 2:106) which essentially maintains that verses  &#8220;revealed&#8221; later in Muhammad&#8217;s career take precedence over the earlier ones,  whenever there is a contradiction.</p>
<p>But why the contradiction in the first place? The standard view has been  that, since in the early years of Islam, Muhammad and his community were far  outnumbered by the infidels and idolaters, a message of peace and coexistence  was in order (sound familiar?). However, after he migrated to Medina and grew in  military strength and numbers, the violent and intolerant verses were  &#8220;revealed,&#8221; inciting Muslims to go on the offensive — now that they were capable  of doing so. According to this view, quite standard among the ulema, one can  only conclude that the peaceful Meccan verses were ultimately a ruse to buy  Islam time till it became sufficiently strong to implement its &#8220;true&#8221; verses  which demand conquest. Or, as traditionally understood and implemented by  Muslims themselves, when the latter are weak and in a minority position, they  should preach and behave according to the Meccan verses (peace and tolerance);  when strong, they should go on the offensive, according to the Medinan verses  (war and conquest). The vicissitudes of Islamic history are a testimony to this  dichotomy.</p>
<p>A Muslim colleague of mine once made this clear during a casual, though  revealing, conversation. After expounding to him all those problematic doctrines  that make it impossible for Muslims to peacefully coexist with infidels — jihad,  <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://salafiyyah-jadeedah.tripod.com/wala_wal_bara/Alee_Imran.htm" href="http://salafiyyah-jadeedah.tripod.com/wala_wal_bara/Alee_Imran.htm">loyalty  and enmity</a></span>, <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.java-man.com/pages/Books/alhisba.html" href="http://www.java-man.com/pages/Books/alhisba.html">enjoining the right and  forbidding the wrong</a></span> — I pointedly asked him how and why he, as a  Muslim, did not uphold them. He kept prevaricating, pointing to those other,  abrogated verses of peace and tolerance. Assuming he was totally oblivious of  such arcane doctrines as abrogation, I (rather triumphantly) began explaining to  him the distinction between Meccan (tolerant) and Medinan (intolerant) verses,  and how the latter abrogate the former. He simply smiled, saying, &#8220;I know; but  I&#8217;m currently living in Mecca&#8221; — that is, like his weak and outnumbered prophet  living among an infidel majority in Mecca, he too, for survival&#8217;s sake, felt  compelled to preach peace, tolerance, and coexistence to the infidel majority of  America.</p>
<h3><strong>War is eternal</strong></h3>
<p>The fact that Islam legitimizes deceit during war cannot be all that  surprising; as the saying goes, all&#8217;s fair in love and war. Moreover, non-Muslim  thinkers and philosophers, such as Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, and Hobbes, all  justified deceit in war. The crucial difference, however, is that, according to  all four recognized schools of Sunni jurisprudence, war against the infidel goes  on in <em>perpetuity</em> — until &#8220;all chaos ceases, and all religion belongs to  Allah&#8221; (Koran 8:39). In its entry on jihad, the definitive <em>Encyclopaedia of  Islam</em> simply states:</p>
<blockquote><p>The duty of the jihad exists as long as the universal domination of Islam has  not been attained. Peace with non-Muslim nations is, therefore, a provisional  state of affairs only; the chance of circumstances alone can justify it  temporarily. Furthermore there can be no question of genuine peace treaties with  these nations; only truces, whose duration ought not, in principle, to exceed  ten years, are authorized. But even such truces are precarious, inasmuch as they  can, before they expire, be repudiated unilaterally should it appear more  profitable for Islam to resume the conflict.</p></blockquote>
<p>Moreover, going back to the doctrine of abrogation, the vast majority of the  ulema agree that Koran 9:5, famously known as <em>ayat al-saif</em> — the &#8220;sword  verse&#8221; — <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.meforum.org/article/1754" href="http://www.meforum.org/article/1754">has abrogated</a></span> some 124 of the  more peaceful Meccan verses.</p>
<p>The obligatory jihad is best expressed by Islam&#8217;s dichotomized worldview that  pits <em>Dar al-Islam</em> (the &#8220;realm of submission,&#8221; i.e., the Islamic world),  against <em>Dar al-Harb</em> (the &#8220;realm of war,&#8221; i.e., the non-Islamic world)  until the former subsumes the latter. Internationally renowned Muslim historian  and philosopher Ibn Khaldun (d. 1406) articulates this division thusly: &#8220;In the  Muslim community, holy war [jihad] is a religious <em>duty</em>, because of the  universalism of the Muslim mission and the <em>obligation</em> to convert  everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force. The other religious groups  [specifically Christianity and Judaism] did not have a universal mission, and  the holy war was not a religious duty for them, save only for purposes of  defense. … But Islam is under <em>obligation</em> to gain power over other  nations.&#8221;</p>
<p>This concept is highlighted by the fact that, based on the ten-year treaty of  Hudaibiya (628), ratified between Muhammad and his Quraish opponents in Mecca,  ten years is, theoretically, the maximum amount of time Muslims can be at peace  with infidels. Based on Muhammad&#8217;s example of breaking the treaty after two  years (by citing a Quraish infraction), the sole function of the &#8220;peace treaty&#8221;  (or <em>hudna</em>) is to buy weakened Muslims time to regroup before going on the  offensive once more. Incidentally, according to <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/bukhari/067.sbt.html#007.067.427" href="http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/bukhari/067.sbt.html#007.067.427">a  canonical hadith</a></span>, Muhammad said, &#8220;If I take an oath and later find  something else better, I do what is better and break my oath.&#8221; The prophet  further encouraged Muslims to <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/bukhari/089.sbt.html#009.089.260" href="http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/bukhari/089.sbt.html#009.089.260">do  the same</a></span>: &#8220;If you ever take an oath to do something and later on you  find that something else is better, then you should expiate your oath and do  what is better.&#8221;</p>
<p>After negotiating a peace treaty criticized by Muslims as conceding too much  to Israel, former PLO leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Yasser Arafat, <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.danielpipes.org/316/al-hudaybiya-and-lessons-from-the-prophet-muhammads" href="http://www.danielpipes.org/316/al-hudaybiya-and-lessons-from-the-prophet-muhammads">speaking  to Muslims</a></span> in a mosque and off the record, justified his actions by  saying, &#8220;I see this agreement as being no more than the agreement signed between  our Prophet Muhammad and the Quraish in Mecca.&#8221; In other words, like his  prophet, the &#8220;moderate&#8221; Arafat was giving his word only to annul it once  &#8220;something else better&#8221; came along — that is, once Palestinians became strong  enough to renew the offensive.</p>
<p>Most recently, a new Islamic group associated with Hamas called Jaysh al-Umma  (Islam&#8217;s army) <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/022502.php" href="http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/022502.php">stated clearly</a></span>,  &#8220;Muslims all over the world are obliged to fight the Israelis <em>and the  infidels until only Islam rules the earth</em>.&#8221; Realizing their slip, they  quickly clarified: &#8220;We say that the world will not live in peace as long as the  blood of Muslims continues to be shed.&#8221; Which is it — until Muslim blood stops  being shed in Israel or &#8220;until only Islam rules the earth&#8221;?</p>
<p>These are all clear instances of Muslims feigning openness to the idea of  peace simply in order to buy more time to build up their strength.</p>
<p>Here, then, is the problem: If Islam must be in a constant state of war with  the non-Muslim world, which need not be physical, as the ulema have classified  several non-violent forms of jihad, such as &#8220;jihad-of-the-pen&#8221; (propaganda) and  &#8220;money-jihad&#8221; (economic); and if Muslims are permitted to lie and feign loyalty,  amiability, even affection to the infidel, simply to further their war efforts —  what does one make of <em>any</em> Muslim overtures of peace, tolerance, or  dialogue?</p>
<p>This is more obvious when one considers that, every single time Muslims  &#8220;reach out&#8221; for &#8220;peace,&#8221; it is always when <em>they</em> are in a weakened  condition vis-à-vis infidels — that is, when they, not their non-Muslim  competitors, benefit from the peace. This is the lesson of the last two  centuries of Muslim-Western interaction, wherein the former have been militarily  inferior and thus beholden to the latter.</p>
<p>One wonders if the reverse would hold true. If, for example, the Palestinians  suddenly became stronger than Israel and could annihilate it, if Israel reached  out for peace or concessions, would the (overwhelmingly Muslim) Palestinians  grant it? In fact, the answer to this question is evident in all those countries  where non-Muslim groups live as minorities among Muslim majorities: while living  in constant social subjugation (according to Koran 9:29) they are also  sporadically persecuted and killed — such as the Christian Copts of Egypt who,  after merely assembling for prayer in a condemned factory, found <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.aina.org/news/20081126035704.htm" href="http://www.aina.org/news/20081126035704.htm">20,000 rioting  Muslims</a></span> surrounding them, screaming the Muslim war cry, &#8220;Allah Akbar,&#8221;  while throwing stones at them.</p>
<h3><strong>Reciprocal treatment or religious obligation?</strong></h3>
<p>Why did Osama bin Laden, who firmly believes in the division of the world  into two entities — Islam and the rest — which must war until the former  dominates the globe, attack the U.S.? The following anecdote sheds some light:  after a group of prominent Muslims wrote a letter to Americans saying that Islam  is a peaceful religion that wishes to coexist with others, seeking only to &#8220;live  and let live,&#8221; bin Laden, thinking no non-Muslim would see his letter,  castigated them as follows:</p>
<blockquote><p>As to the relationship between Muslims and infidels, this is summarized by  the Most High&#8217;s Word: &#8220;We [Muslims] renounce you [non-Muslims]. Enmity and hate  shall forever reign between us — till you believe in Allah alone&#8221; [Koran 60:4].  So there is an enmity, evidenced by fierce hostility from the heart. And this  fierce hostility — that is, battle — ceases <em>only</em> if the infidel submits  to the authority of Islam, or if his blood is forbidden from being shed [i.e., a  dhimmi], or <em>if Muslims are at that point in time weak and incapable</em> [i.e., taqiyya]. But if the hate at any time extinguishes from the heart, this  is great apostasy! … Such, then, is the basis and foundation of the relationship  between the infidel and the Muslim. Battle, animosity, and hatred — directed  from the Muslim to the infidel — is the foundation of our religion. And we  consider this a justice and kindness to them (from <em>The Al Qaeda Reader</em>,  p. 43).</p></blockquote>
<p>It bears repeating that this hostile <em>weltanschauung</em> is well supported  by mainstream Islam&#8217;s schools of jurisprudence (i.e., there is nothing &#8220;radical&#8221;  about it). When addressing Western audiences, however, bin Laden&#8217;s tone  drastically changes; he lists any number of &#8220;grievances&#8221; for fighting the West —  from Palestinian oppression, to the Western exploitation of women and U.S.  failure to sign the Kyoto protocol — never once alluding to fighting the U.S.  simply because it is an infidel entity that must be subjugated. Indeed, he often  initiates his messages to the West by saying, &#8220;Reciprocal treatment is part of  justice&#8221; or &#8220;<span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NWNhNGMxZDk1NmEwZDQxMDdlOWNlZjczZTEwMWE3ZTc=" href="http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=NWNhNGMxZDk1NmEwZDQxMDdlOWNlZjczZTEwMWE3ZTc=">Peace  to whoever follows guidance</a></span>&#8221; — though he means something entirely  different than what his Western audience thinks.</p>
<p>This is of course a clear instance of taqiyya, as bin Laden is not only  waging a physical jihad, but one of propaganda. Convincing a secular West (whose  epistemology does not allow for the notion of religious conquest) that the  current conflict is entirely its fault only garners him and his cause more  sympathy; conversely, he also knows that if Americans were to realize that, all  political grievances aside — real or imagined — according to Islam&#8217;s worldview,  nothing short of their submission to Islam can ever bring peace, his propaganda  campaign would be quickly compromised. Yet the fact is al-Qaeda is motivated  more by <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.meriajournal.com/en/asp/journal/2008/december/ibrahim/6.pdf" href="http://www.meriajournal.com/en/asp/journal/2008/december/ibrahim/6.pdf">religious  obligation than reciprocal treatment</a></span>. Hence the constant need to lie,  &#8220;for war,&#8221; as their prophet asserted, &#8220;is deceit.&#8221;</p>
<p>It should be added that, though the vast majority of the world&#8217;s Muslims are  not active terrorists, bin Laden&#8217;s list of grievances against the West is  paradigmatic of the average Muslim&#8217;s grievances. However, if they are unaware  that, according to Islam — not bin Laden — animosity towards infidels transcends  time, space, and grievances, and that religious obligation commands the war  continue till &#8220;all religion belongs to Allah,&#8221; they are either ignorant of their  own faith, or — taqiyya?</p>
<h3><strong>With friends like these …</strong></h3>
<p>Associated with Hamas, denounced by American politicians for &#8220;pursuing an  extreme Islamist political agenda,&#8221; its members arrested for terrorism-related  charges — the <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/groupProfile.asp?grpid=6176" href="http://www.discoverthenetworks.org/groupProfile.asp?grpid=6176">Council on  American-Islamic Relations</a></span> (CAIR) is another Muslim group which appears  to be less than sincere to its non-Muslim audience; situated in the U.S., it is  also much closer to home. When it comes to the issue of jihad, perpetual  warfare, even doctrines such as taqiyya — indeed, all that has been delineated  in this essay — CAIR has been at the forefront of not only denying their  existence, but accusing of &#8220;Islamophobia&#8221; and threatening with lawsuits anyone  alluding to them, thereby censoring any critical talk of Islam.</p>
<p>Could CAIR be taking lessons from the Muslim convert Masud, whom Muhammad  urged to go and live among the Confederate infidels, solely in order to mislead  and betray them, so that Islam might triumph?</p>
<p>The most obvious example of taqiyya, however, comes from an entire nation:  Saudi Arabia. If any nation closely follows Sharia — including, but not limited  to, the division of the world into two perpetually warring halves, Islam and  infidelity — it is Saudi Arabia, a.k.a. America&#8217;s &#8220;friend.&#8221; According to Sharia,  for instance, the Saudis will not allow the construction of a single church or  synagogue on their land; Bibles are banned and burned; Christians engaged in any  kind of missionary activity are arrested, tortured, and sometimes killed; Muslim  converts to Christianity are put to death.</p>
<p>Yet for all that, in their attempt to portray Islam as a &#8220;tolerant&#8221; religion,  a religion that, once again, merely seeks &#8220;peacefully coexist&#8221; with others, the  Saudis have been <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/023258.php" href="http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/023258.php">pushing for more  &#8220;dialogue&#8221;</a></span> between Muslims and non-Muslims, specifically Christians and  Jews (ironically, those two peoples who are currently much more powerful than  Islam). Rather tellingly, however, Saudi Arabia refuses to host any of these  conferences; after all, their prophet Muhammad&#8217;s deathbed wish was to expel  <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/muslim/019.smt.html#019.4366" href="http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/hadith/muslim/019.smt.html#019.4366">the  Jews and Christians</a></span> from the Arabian peninsula; how to re-invite them  now and talk of peace and tolerance? Moreover, surely the Saudis fear that a  real &#8220;debate&#8221; — not just the <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/archives/022037.php" href="http://www.jihadwatch.org/dhimmiwatch/archives/022037.php">perfunctory  talk</a></span> of &#8220;mutual understanding&#8221; that permeates these farces — might take  place, once the non-Muslim participants discover that they are not free to  practice their faiths on Saudi soil? The most recent interfaith conference was  held in Madrid, where King Abdullah, despite all the aforementioned, asserted,  &#8220;Islam is a religion of moderation and tolerance, a message that calls for  constructive dialogue among followers of all religions.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mere days later, <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080724/OPINION09/807240302/-1/OPINION" href="http://www.goerie.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080724/OPINION09/807240302/-1/OPINION">it  was revealed</a></span> that Saudi children&#8217;s textbooks still call Christians and  Jews &#8220;infidels,&#8221; the &#8220;hated enemies,&#8221; and &#8220;pigs and swine.&#8221; A multiple choice  test in a fourth-grade book asks Muslim children, &#8220;Who is a &#8216;true&#8217; Muslim?&#8221; The  correct answer is not the man who prays, fasts, etc., but rather, &#8220;A man  worships God alone, loves the believers, and hates the infidels&#8221; — that is,  those same people the Saudis want to &#8220;dialogue&#8221; with.</p>
<p>Clearly, then, when Saudis — or other Sharia-following Muslims — call for  &#8220;dialogue&#8221; they are merely following the aforementioned advice of Muhammad&#8217;s  friend, Abu Darda: &#8220;Let us smile to the face of some people while our hearts  curse them.&#8221;</p>
<h3><strong>Implications</strong></h3>
<p>There is also a troubling philosophical — again, specifically epistemological  — aspect to taqiyya. Anyone who truly believes that no less an authority than  God justifies and, through his prophet&#8217;s example, sometimes even  <em>encourages</em> deception, will not experience any ethical qualms or dilemmas  about lying. This is especially true if the human mind is indeed a tabula rasa  shaped by environment and education: deception becomes second nature.</p>
<p>Consider the case of Ali Mohammad — bin Laden&#8217;s &#8220;first trainer&#8221; and longtime  al-Qaeda operative. Despite being entrenched in the highest echelons of the  terror network, his <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><a title="http://www.investigativeproject.org/article/187" href="http://www.investigativeproject.org/article/187">confidence at  dissembling</a></span> enabled him to become a CIA agent and FBI informant for  years. People who knew him regarded him &#8220;with fear and awe for his incredible  self-confidence, his inability to be intimidated, absolute ruthless  determination to destroy the enemies of Islam, and his zealous belief in the  tenets of militant Islamic fundamentalism.&#8221; Indeed, this sentence sums it all:  for a &#8220;zealous belief&#8221; in Islam&#8217;s &#8220;tenets,&#8221; which, as seen, legitimize  deception, will certainly go a long way in creating &#8220;incredible self-confidence&#8221;  when lying.</p>
<p>The bottom line is, any Muslim who closely observes Sharia law — and that is,  incidentally, the definition of a <em>Muslim</em>, &#8220;one who submits to (the laws  of) Allah&#8221; — laws that, among other bellicosities, clearly and unambiguously  split the world into two perpetually warring halves — such a Muslim will always  have a &#8220;divinely sanctioned&#8221; right to deceive, until &#8220;all chaos ceases, and all  religion belongs to Allah&#8221; (Koran 8:39). All Muslim overtures for peace,  dialogue, or even temporary truces must be seen in this light.</p>

<p>The nine Pakistani Muslim terrorists who went on an utterly senseless killing  rampage in Mumbai on 26/11 &#8211; India&#8217;s 9/11 &#8211; gunning down more than 170 people,  including 33 Muslims, scores of Hindus, as well as Christians and Jews &#8211; are  still in the morgue because the leadership of India&#8217;s Muslim community is  refusing to allow them to be buried in the main Muslim cemetery of Mumbai.  &#8220;People who committed this heinous crime cannot be called Muslim,&#8221; said Hanif  Nalkhande, a spokesman for the Muslim Jama Masjid Trust which runs the cemetery.  M.J. Akbar, the Indian-Muslim editor of <em>Covert,</em> an Indian investigative  journal, explained: &#8220;Terrorism has no place in Islamic doctrine. The Koranic  term for the killing of innocents is &#8216;<em>fasad.</em>&#8216; Terrorists are  <em>fasadis</em>, not <em>jihadis.</em>&#8220;<br />
The in-your-face defiance of  Islamist terrorists by Mumbai&#8217;s Muslims stands out against a dismal landscape of  predominantly Sunni Muslim suicide murderers who have attacked civilians in  mosques and markets from Iraq to Pakistan to Afghanistan, but who have been  treated by mainstream Arab media, like <em>Al Jazeera,</em> or by extremist  Islamist spiritual leaders and Web sites, as &#8220;martyrs&#8221; whose actions deserve  praise. The only effective way to stop this trend is for &#8220;the village&#8221; &#8211; the  Muslim community itself &#8211; to say &#8220;no more&#8221;; for the culture and faith community  to delegitimize this kind of behavior, openly, loudly and consistently. India&#8217;s  Muslims, the second-largest Muslim community in the world after Indonesia, do a  great service to Islam by delegitimizing suicide-murderers. ..</p></blockquote>

<p><span style="font-family:Arial;">What finally will rouse Westerners from their stupor, to  name the enemy and fight the war to victory? Only one thing seems likely:  massive deaths, say 100,000 casualties in a single WMD attack. Short of that, it  appears, much of the West, contently deploying defensive measures against  fancifully-described &#8220;activists,&#8221; will gently slumber on.</span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><em>Haviv Rettig Gur in <a href="http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1231866576202&amp;pagename=JPArticle%2FShowFull" target="_self">J Post </a>identified at least five methods of &#8220;fighting&#8221; that Hamas is using that are war crimes.  In fact, it is not just Hamas, but Islamo-fascists of all stripes that use these methods.</em></p>
<ul>
<li>&#8230;</li>
<li>&#8220;First, the deliberate targeting of civilians is in and of itself a war  crime,&#8221; he noted, referring to the Hamas rockets fired at southern towns for  eight years.</li>
<li>&#8220;A second war crime is when Hamas attacks [from within] civilian areas and  civilian structures, whether it be an apartment building, a mosque or a  hospital, in order to be immune from a response from Israel&#8230;.Civilians are  protected persons, and civilian areas are protected areas. Any use of a civilian  infrastructure to launch bombs is itself a war crime.&#8221;</li>
<li>Third, &#8220;the misuse and abuse of humanitarian symbols for purposes of  launching attacks is called the perfidy principle. For example, using an  ambulance to transport fighters or weapons or disguising oneself as a doctor in  a hospital, or using a UN logo or flag, are war crimes.&#8221;</li>
<li>The fourth violation &#8220;is the prohibition in the Fourth Geneva Convention and  international jurisprudence against the direct and public incitement to  genocide. The Hamas covenant itself is a standing incitement to genocide.&#8221;</li>
<li>The fifth crime relates to the scope of the attack on civilians, which  upgrades the violation to a crime against humanity. &#8220;When you deliberately hit  civilians not infrequently but in a systematic, widespread attack, that&#8217;s  defined in the treaty of the International Criminal Court and international  humanitarian law as a crime against humanity.&#8221;</li>
<li>The final war crime for which Hamas is responsible is the recruitment of  children into armed conflict.</li>
<li>&#8220;When Israel responds and civilians are killed because Israel is targeting  an area from which rockets were launched, then it is Hamas which bears  responsibility for the deaths&#8230;</li>

EU Parliament President Hans-Gert  Poettering called on Arab governments on Tuesday to allow Christian churches to  be built in their countries in the same way that mosques can be built in Europe.  In Saudi Arabia, at the end of a tour of Gulf countries, Poettering said Arab  governments need to be more tolerant of other religions. &#8220;It is vital that we  get a better understanding of the Islamic culture,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But it&#8217;s a two-way  road. We ask for tolerance for Christians&#8230;in the Arab world. It&#8217;s  mutual.&#8221;<br />
Poettering noted that Saudi Arabia is host to millions of  foreign workers, including more than one million Filipinos, most of whom are  Christian. &#8220;There are hundreds of thousands of Catholics here. We have Christmas  tomorrow and they cannot assemble in a church.&#8221;  (<em>AFP</em>)</li>

<p>Well Mark Steyn&#8217;s recent piece in the <a href="http://article.nationalreview.com/print/?q=NzA2Y2E2MDU2YjQzOTQwZjUzNjcwZDA0OTE3YmFkYzg=">National Review Online</a> shows how Western Media and society continues to fail in clearly identifying the enemy&#8211; Islamfascism.</p>
<p>The media bends over backwards to avoid &#8220;offending&#8221; Muslims and &#8220;root cause&#8221; explanations still abound, ignoring the hate ideology of Radical Islam.</p>

<blockquote><p><span class="articletitle">Silence=Acceptance</span><br />

<p><span class="drop">S</span>hortly after the London Tube bombings in 2005, a reader of Tim Blair,<em> </em>the <em>Sydney Daily Telegraph</em>’s columnar wag, sent him a note-perfect parody of a typical newspaper headline: “British Muslims Fear Repercussions Over Tomorrow’s Train Bombing.”</p>
<p>Indeed. And so it goes. This time round — Bombay — it was the Associated Press that filed a story about how Muslims “found themselves on the defensive once again about bloodshed linked to their religion.”</p>
<p>Oh, I don’t know about that. In fact, you’d be hard pressed from most news reports to figure out the bloodshed was “linked” to any religion, least of all one beginning with “I-“ and ending in “-slam.” In the three years since those British bombings, the media have more or less entirely abandoned the offending formulations — “Islamic terrorists,” “Muslim extremists” — and by the time of the assault on Bombay found it easier just to call the alleged perpetrators “militants” or “gunmen” or “teenage gunmen,” as in the opening line of this report in<em> </em>the<em> Australian</em>: “An Adelaide woman in India for her wedding is lucky to be alive after teenage gunmen ran amok…”</p>
<p>Kids today, eh? Always running amok in an aimless fashion.<span id="more-296"></span></p>
<p>The veteran British TV anchor Jon Snow, on the other hand, opted for the more cryptic locution “practitioners.” “Practitioners” of what, exactly?</p>
<p>Hard to say. And getting harder. Tom Gross <a href="http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZTJhMjA1MDZiNDkzYTE0MzI0NmI2MjdiMTNiMDBhYTg=">produced</a> a jaw-dropping round-up of Bombay media coverage: The discovery that, for the first time in an Indian terrorist atrocity, Jews had been attacked, tortured, and killed produced from<em> </em>the<em> New York Times</em> a serene befuddlement: “It is not known if the Jewish center was strategically chosen, or if it was an accidental hostage scene.”</p>
<p>Hmm. Greater Bombay forms one of the world’s five biggest cities. It has a population of nearly 20 million. But only one Jewish center, located in a building that gives no external clue as to the bounty waiting therein. An “accidental hostage scene” that one of the “practitioners” just happened to stumble upon? “I must be the luckiest jihadist in town. What are the odds?”</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the New Age guru Deepak Chopra laid all the blame on American foreign policy for “going after the wrong people” and inflaming moderates, and “<span lang="EN">that inflammation then gets organized and appears as this disaster in Bombay.”</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN">Really? The inflammation just “appears”? Like a bad pimple? The “fairer” we get to the, ah, inflamed militant practitioners, the unfairer we get to everyone else. At the Chabad House, the murdered Jews were described in almost all the Western media as “ultra-Orthodox,” “ultra-” in this instance being less a term of theological precision than a generalized code for “strange, weird people, nothing against them personally, but they probably shouldn’t have been over there in the first place.” Are they stranger or weirder than their killers? Two “inflamed moderates” entered the Chabad House, shouted “Allahu Akbar!,” tortured the Jews and murdered them, including the young Rabbi’s pregnant wife. Their two-year-old child escaped because of a quick-witted (non-Jewish) nanny who hid in a closet and then, risking being mown down by machine-gun fire, ran with him to safety.</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN">The<em> Times</em> was being silly in suggesting this was just an “accidental” hostage opportunity — and not just because, when Muslim terrorists capture Jews, it’s not a hostage situation, it’s a mass murder-in-waiting. The sole surviving “militant” revealed that the Jewish center had been targeted a year in advance. The 28-year-old rabbi was Gavriel Holtzberg. His pregnant wife was Rivka Holtzberg. Their orphaned son is Moshe Holtzberg, and his brave nanny is Sandra Samuels. Remember their names, not because they’re any more important than the Indians, Britons, and Americans targeted in the attack on Bombay, but because they are an especially revealing glimpse into the pathologies of the perpetrators.</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN">In a well-planned attack on iconic Bombay landmarks symbolizing great power and wealth, the “militants” nevertheless found time to divert 20 percent of their manpower to torturing and killing a handful of obscure Jews helping the city’s poor in a nondescript building. If they were just “teenage gunmen” or “militants” in the cause of Kashmir, engaged in a more or less conventional territorial dispute with India, why kill the only rabbi in Bombay? Dennis Prager got to the absurdity of it when he invited his readers to imagine Basque separatists attacking Madrid: “</span>Would the terrorists take time out to murder all those in the Madrid Chabad House? The idea is ludicrous.<span lang="EN">”</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN">And yet we take it for granted that Pakistani “militants” in a long-running border dispute with India would take time out of their hectic schedule to kill Jews. In going to ever more baroque lengths to avoid saying “Islamic” or “Muslim” or “terrorist,” we have somehow managed to internalize the pathologies of these men.</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN">&#8230;.Last week, a Canadian critic reprimanded me for failing to understand that Muslims feel “vulnerable.” Au contraire, they project tremendous cultural confidence, as well they might: They’re the world’s fastest-growing population. A prominent British Muslim announced the other day that, when the United Kingdom becomes a Muslim state, non-Muslims will be required to wear insignia identifying them as infidels. If he’s feeling “vulnerable,” he’s doing a terrific job of covering it up.</span></p>
<p><span lang="EN">We are told that the “vast majority” of the 1.6-1.8 billion Muslims (in Deepak Chopra’s estimate) are “moderate.” Maybe so, but they’re also quiet. And, as the AIDs activists used to say, “Silence=Acceptance.” It equals acceptance of the things done in the name of their faith. Rabbi Holtzberg was not murdered because of a territorial dispute over Kashmir or because of Bush’s foreign policy. He was murdered in the name of Islam — “Allahu Akbar.”<br />
</span><br />
I wrote in my book, <a href="http://www.nationalreview.com/redirect/amazon.p?j=1596985275"><em>America Alone</em></a>, that “reforming” Islam is something only Muslims can do. But they show very little sign of being interested in doing it, and the rest of us are inclined to accept that. Spread a rumor that a Koran got flushed down the can at Gitmo, and there’ll be rioting throughout the Muslim world. Publish some dull cartoons in a minor Danish newspaper, and there’ll be protests around the planet. But slaughter the young pregnant wife of a rabbi in Bombay in the name of Allah, and that’s just business as usual. And, if it is somehow “understandable” that for the first time in history it’s no longer safe for a Jew to live in India, then we are greasing the skids for a very slippery slope. Muslims, the AP headline informs us, “worry about image.” Not enough.<br />

<p>Far in the distance, a protracted scream comes out of a dark tunnel. As it  rises, the ground begins to shake. A dot of light speeds toward the viewer. In  seconds, it fills the screen and a rattling blur of cold steel shrieks past the  camera.</p>
<p>The action cuts to the forecourt of King&#8217;s Cross station. Hasib Hussein, a  gawky 18-year-old with soft eyes, looks imploringly at the authoritative figure  of Sidique Khan.</p>
<p>&#8220;&#8230;&#8221;There is nothing to fear in death, Hasib,&#8221; he says. &#8220;When the time comes,  we&#8217;ll face toward Mecca together, as one.&#8221; He looks Hussein in the eyes. &#8220;Our  lives begin today.&#8221; Hussein nods. Khan ruffles his hair and disappears to  slaughter commuters on the London Underground. Hussein screws up his courage and  prepares to murder an equally random collection of passengers on a bus heading  out from King&#8217;s Cross.</p>
<p>So begins <em>The London Bombers,</em> one of the most thoroughly researched  and politically important drama-documentaries commissioned by British  television. A team of journalists, at least one of whom was a British Muslim,  reported to Terry Cafolla, a writer who won many awards for his dramatization of  the religious hatred which engulfed the Holy Cross School in Belfast. The  reporters spent months in Beeston, the Leeds slum where three of the four 7/7  bombers &#8211; Sidique Khan, Hasib Hussein and Shehzad Tanweer &#8211; grew up. They didn&#8217;t  find that the &#8220;root cause&#8221; of murderous rage was justifiable anger at the  &#8220;humiliation&#8221; America, Israel, Britain and Denmark and her tactless cartoonists  had inflicted on Muslims.</p>
<p>Instead, they inadvertently confirmed the ideas of Ernest Gellner, the late  professor of &#8230;</p>
<p>His answer was that Wahhabism and its ever-more-zealous theocratic variants  could appear as modern as secular humanism. They represented the pure religion  of scholars and the city, which could free Muslims from their peasant parents&#8217;  embarrassingly superstitious faith.<span id="more-294"></span></p>
<p>Accepting fanaticism was a mark of superiority: a visible sign of upward  mobility from rural idiocy to urban sophistication.</p>
<p>And so it proved in Leeds. The picture of Beeston the BBC presents is a  disorientating mixture of the provincial and the cosmopolitan. On one hand,  Beeston is almost as much of a village as the ancestral homes of its Pakistani  inhabitants. On the other, its parochialism is an illusion. Cheap flights take  the bombers to the madrassas and terrorist training camps of Pakistan. The  Internet connects them to the global jihadi network.</p>
<p>In one scene, Hasib Hussein hears a message ping on his mobile. He flips it  open and finds a beheading video. He watches the snuff movie impassively,  showing no emotion when the killer cuts a hostage&#8217;s throat.</p>
<p>Later Khan and Hussein learn how to make a bomb, not by infiltrating an army  regiment, but by the simple expedient of going to an Internet cafe and logging  on to an Arab jihadi site. &#8220;What did people do before Google?&#8221; the admiring  Hussein asks.</p>
<p>SIDIQUE KHAN is the dominant figure. He turns against the traditional Sufism (<em>NB peaceful Islam</em>)  of his father, who remains stuck in the tribal and religious loyalties of the  subcontinent. By breaking with both, Khan escapes an arranged marriage designed  to keep wealth within the extended family, and enters into a love match with a  fellow student at Leeds Metropolitan University. His father&#8217;s <em>pir</em>, or  Sufi priest, demands a hearing.</p>
<p>While Khan waits to talk to him, he sees the elder hang a miracle cure &#8211; a  miniature Koran &#8211; round a child&#8217;s neck. Khan looks on in disgust. &#8220;What you do  here is not harmless, it&#8217;s dangerous,&#8221; he thunders. &#8220;How dare you contaminate  Islam? There is only one Allah, and He does not share His power, not with  anyone&#8230; Your tradition of Islam, your parlor tricks, they belong in the hills  of Pakistan.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>The London Bombers</em> works so well because it&#8217;s a family drama about  intergenerational conflict as well as an account of the largest massacre in  Britain since Lockerbie. The BBC captures the claustrophobic milieu of  bodybuilding and vigilantism into which the men retreat. The bomb-making in a  tiny terraced house becomes a male-bonding ritual in which the members of a cult  of death squash each other&#8217;s doubts.</p>
<p>&#8230;.SO PSYCHOLOGICALLY convincing is the portrayal of macho loyalty and the lure  of barbarism that viewers can understand how these men turn into mass murderers.  Except that they can&#8217;t and won&#8217;t understand, because the BBC will not give them  the opportunity to understand. This is a review of a drama that was never made.</p>
<p>The reporters convinced the families of three of the four bombers to  cooperate. By the end, they agreed that the BBC&#8217;s account of their sons and  brothers&#8217; lives and deaths was accurate. Cafolla submitted five versions of the  script. He was working up to a final draft when the BBC abandoned the project.  The official reason is that the drama didn&#8217;t make the grade. The script is  circulating in samizdat form, which is how it reached <em>Standpoint</em>, and  every writer and director who has read it disagrees. As do the journalists. They  say that BBC managers did not tell them they were stopping production because  their work was substandard but because it was &#8220;Islamophobic.&#8221;</p>
<p>Eh? The defining characteristic of Islamophobic prejudice is the belief that  all Muslims are potential terrorists, and yet here, apparently, is the BBC  seconding that motion by arguing that a dramatic examination of terrorism would  be offensive to all Muslims.</p>
<p>It makes no sense until you understand the moral contortions of the  postmodern liberal establishment. In the past few years, the Foreign Office, the  Home Office, the West Midlands Police, the liberal press, the Liberal Democrats,  the Metropolitan Police, the Crown Prosecution Service, the lord chief justice  and the archbishop of Canterbury have either supported ultra-reactionary  doctrines or made libelous accusations against the critics of radical Islam. All  have sought to prove their liberal tolerance by supporting the most illiberal  and intolerant wing of British Islam, and by blocking out the voices of its  Muslim and non-Muslim critics as they do it.</p>
<p>As the sorry history of <em>The London Bombers</em> shows, they have left us a  country that cannot tell its own stories, a land so debilitated by anxiety and  stupefied by relativism that it dare not meet the eyes of the face that stares  back at it from the mirror.</p>

<li>British Muslim leaders have helped generate the impression that everyone is  working together to separate rogue extremists from the religious establishment.  But Monday night, the &#8220;Dispatches&#8221; documentary series on Channel 4 TV in the UK  revealed a very different picture of what goes on in some of the UK&#8217;s flagship  Muslim institutions.</li>
<li>The filmmakers went undercover at the London Central Mosque in Regent&#8217;s Park  to show the discord between what imams preached outwardly to the public and what  they preached to their faithful in private. According to the documentary, they  teach the faithful that God orders them to kill homosexuals and apostates; that  they should curtail the freedom of women; and that they should view non-Muslims  in a derogatory manner and limit contact with them.</li>
<li>Many of these leaders are trained in Saudi Arabian Wahhabi philosophy, and  use Saudi-approved textbooks and pedagogical materials to teach young students.</li>
</ul>
<li>Saudi Arabia&#8217;s education and religious outreach programs, whether in the  form of textbooks, library endowments or <em>madrassah</em> construction,  constitute one of the largest aid programs in the world &#8211; roughly $4 billion a  year &#8211; and introduce hundreds of millions of schoolchildren to radical Wahhabi  doctrine via Saudi Embassy-run schools and educational programs in mosques.</li>
